Abstract
La técnica de arco segmentado es un conjunto de procedimientos en los cuales se usan determinadas secciones de alambre con el objetivo de manejar de una manera individual y por segmentos una maloclusión dental.
La técnica de arco segmentado fue desarrollada por el Dr. Charles Burstone a inicios de los años sesenta en la universidad de Connecticut, EUA. Otros investigadores como Marcotte, Melsen, Nanda, Sachdeva contribuyeron en el desarrollo de la técnica así como también en la difusión de esta. El conocimiento de la técnica de arco segmentado nos da la posibilidad de aplicar los principios de la biomecánica en la realidad clínica así como también un mejor control de los efectos secundarios generados. La técnica de arco segmentado (TAS) nos permite solucionar los problemas por grupos de dientes. Es así que no emplea arcos continuos de níquel titanio o acero inoxidable como se suele utilizar en la técnica de arco continuo, sino que en lugar de ello, emplea arcos de Beta titanio que permiten realizar dobleces sin que el alambre pierda sus propiedades mecánicas.
En la técnica de arco segmentado es muy importante conocer todas las partes involucradas así como también la función que cumple cada una de ellas en dicho movimiento dentario.
The segmented arc technique is a set of procedures in which certain sections of wire are used in order to handle a dental malocclusion in an individual and segmented manner. The segmented arc technique was developed by Dr. Charles Burstone in the early 1960s at the University of Connecticut, USA. Other researchers such as Marcotte, Melsen, Nanda, Sachdeva contributed to the development of the technique as well as its dissemination. The knowledge of the segmented arc technique gives us the possibility of applying the principles of biomechanics in clinical reality as well as a better control of the side effects generated. The segmented arc technique (TAS) allows us to solve problems by groups of teeth. Thus, it does not employ continuous nickel titanium or stainless steel arcs, as it is commonly used in the continuous arc technique, but instead uses Beta titanium arches that allow folds to be made without losing the mechanical properties of the wire. In the segmented arch technique it is very important to know all the involved parties as well as the function that each of them performs in said dental movement.
