Abstract
For many years elastics have been indispensable materials for the orthodontic specialist, they are products that generate forces necessary for dental movements. We can find them derived from latex and not latex, with some differences in their composition, there are many variables that affect their behavior, one of them are the allergies that some patients and professionals have in contact with these materials that can be, from a hives of contact until anaphylactic shock and death. In the market we can find it in different shapes, colors, sizes and in different grams forces. Its great versatility of its use in different mechanics, and new existing systems in orthodontics make it incomparable. The elastics of both latex and non-latex present changes in their mechanical properties, such as the initial loss of strength in the first hours of activation, due to oral environmental causes, such as temperature, humidity, etc. This has generated concern for the companies that manufacture them, creating new elastics for orthodontics called memory elastomers, which according to manufacturers have improved overcoming those unfavorable changes in their mechanical properties, having several brands that promise these improvements. The orthodontic specialist must be trained to use these materials, and know how to choose to be able to deliver ideal and constant forces for their treatments. New systems are being created to offer patients more efficiency, comfort and aesthetics, but they always go hand in hand with elastics that are difficult to replace.
